How to clean wood floors… Timber is divided into two classifications: softwoods or hardwoods, and can be divided into four main laying categories:

• Strip and board
• Woodblock
• Parquet and mosaic
• End grain paving

If the timber is reddish in colour it is usually extremely hard. Unsealed wood is extremely porous, therefore, all new wooden floors or those having been sanded down to bare wood must be sealed with a semi-permanent finish.

Depending upon traffic conditions, a choice of an oil-based sealer (oleo-resinous) or a plastic sealer, such as polyurethane, can be used.

Alternatively, an acrylic water-based varnish or if preferred the wood may be waxed.
